TL;DR: Enzyme cleaners can work on pet urine, but only when the conditions line up: enough time, enough moisture, the right temperature, no other cleaners on the spot and a bottle that is still fresh. In a real home, at least one of those usually slips, and the smell comes back. A non-enzymatic formula skips that list. Skout's Honor Urine Destroyer (for dogs) and Cat Urine & Odor Destroyer use a plant-based surfactant plus a mineral-based deodorizer, so there are no enzymes to activate, nothing to expire and no pre-cleaning step. Beyond the bottle, find the whole spot, soak it as deep as the urine went and pull it back out. If accidents are new, check in with your vet.

Do enzyme cleaners work on pet urine?

Yes, sometimes. Enzyme cleaners break urine down biologically, and vets often recommend them. The catch is that they need specific conditions to finish the job, and a non-enzymatic option like Skout's Honor Urine Destroyer doesn't depend on any of them.

Enzymes are proteins. Like most proteins, they unfold and lose activity when heated or exposed to chemical denaturants. That makes them effective in the right setting and fussy everywhere else.

Where enzyme cleaners tend to come up short:

  • Dwell time. Enzymes digest the mess slowly and need to stay wet while they work. For dried urine, the Edmonton Humane Society advises rehydrating the spot by soaking it multiple times.
  • Temperature. Heat can shut enzymes down, and a cold floor slows them.
  • Mixing. Zoetis Petcare warns that using other products before or after an enzymatic cleaner "will kill off the enzymes you're counting on."
  • Shelf life. Enzyme activity fades as the bottle ages. We cover that trade-off in Advantages of Enzyme-Free Cleaners.

Why does pet urine smell come back after cleaning?

Because part of urine barely dissolves in water. As urine dries, uric acid is left behind in carpet fibers, padding and grout, and humidity can wake the smell back up. Urine Destroyer is built to penetrate carpet, upholstery and other water-safe surfaces to get at the odor where it starts.

The numbers:

Lingering odor also invites repeat visits. Christina Hawkins, DVM, writes on PetMD that if a pet "smells any lingering urine odor, they may continue to re-mark the area." So the spot you cleaned on Tuesday becomes the spot again on Friday. We know the feeling.

What can I use instead of an enzyme cleaner for pet urine?

Use a non-enzymatic urine cleaner. Skout's Honor Urine Destroyer and Cat Urine & Odor Destroyer combine Bio-Kore®, a plant-based surfactant, with a mineral-based molecular deodorizer. There are no enzymes to activate, so they aren't affected by temperature, won't expire and need no pre-cleaning.

How the two technologies split the work:

Our take: enzyme cleaners aren't a scam, they're a narrow tool. If you can control the time, temperature and surface, they can do the job. Most of us are cleaning a hallway rug at 11 p.m. with whatever is under the sink, which is exactly where a formula with fewer conditions earns its spot.

Typical enzyme cleaner Skout's Honor Urine Destroyers
How it works Enzymes digest urine biologically Plant-based surfactant lifts the stain; mineral-based deodorizer reacts with odor compounds
Speed Needs dwell time and moisture Fast acting (dog formula); works instantly (cat formula)
Temperature Heat can deactivate enzymes Not affected by temperature
Other cleaners on the spot Can kill off the enzymes No enzymes to deactivate
Shelf life Activity fades over time Won't expire
Pre-cleaning Often recommended Not required

How do you get pet urine out of carpet without enzymes?

Find the whole spot, saturate it with Urine Destroyer or Cat Urine & Odor Destroyer as deep as the urine went, then pull it back out. Technique matters as much as the bottle, especially on old spots.

  1. Test first. Try a small, hidden area to check colorfastness.
  2. Blot, don't scrub. Press straight down with towels. Scrubbing spreads urine into clean fiber.
  3. Find the edges. In a dark room, a UV blacklight shows dried urine. The real spot is usually bigger than the one you can see.
  4. Saturate. Soak the area, don't mist it, so the cleaner reaches the backing and padding.
  5. Let it sit, following the label directions.
  6. Extract. Blot firmly with an absorbent cloth or use a wet vac. What stays in the padding stays in the padding.
  7. Repeat if needed. Stubborn spots can take more than one application.
  8. Air dry completely before you judge. Damp carpet always smells like something.

Going over it with a carpet machine? Dilute per the machine's instructions, expect extra suds and finish with a clean-water pass. Skip hot water and steam on urine spots: the Edmonton Humane Society notes that heat can "bake" urine into materials.

Try this: the damp-towel check. Once the spot is fully dry, lay a lightly damp towel over it for an hour, then lift it and sniff. Moisture is what wakes up leftover uric acid, so if the smell returns, the source is still in there and the spot needs another round. If it doesn't, you can stop sniffing the rug.

What should you not use on pet urine?

Skip ammonia and vinegar. The Cornell Feline Health Center says they "smell like urine and can be irritating," which can draw pets back to the same place. Reach for a urine-specific formula like Cat Urine & Odor Destroyer instead.

  • Ammonia cleaners: can leave residue that smells like urine (Edmonton Humane Society).
  • Bleach with an enzyme cleaner: Zoetis notes it destroys the enzymes.
  • Heat: hot water, steam and hair dryers can set urine deeper.
  • Fragrance alone: Cornell puts it simply: odors "must be neutralized, not just deodorized."

When are pet urine accidents a reason to call the vet?

Call your vet when accidents are new or the pattern changes. Cornell advises that cats having trouble using the litter box consistently should be checked by a veterinarian. Cleaning with Urine Destroyer handles the spot, and your vet handles the why.

  • A house-trained dog or litter-trained cat suddenly having accidents
  • Straining, or frequent small trips
  • Blood in the urine or a sudden change in its smell
  • Drinking or urinating noticeably more than usual
