TL;DR: Blot up as much as you can right away, then clean the spot with Skout's Honor Urine Destroyer, which is labeled safe for hardwood sealed with a water-safe sealant. Wait 5 minutes, wipe it up, and dry the boards completely. Stain & Odor Remover carries the same hardwood guidance and covers the rest of life's messes. Skip vinegar and steam mops, keep both cleaners off unsealed wood, and call a flooring pro if the stain has turned dark.
How do you get dog pee out of hardwood floors?
Speed matters most. Blot the puddle, then clean the spot with Skout's Honor Urine Destroyer, a non-enzyme formula with a plant-based surfactant and a mineral-based deodorizer that breaks down urine and odor molecules at the source. On sealed hardwood, the goal is clean and dry, never soaked.
- Blot first. Press a thick wad of paper towels onto the puddle. Swap in fresh ones until they come up dry. Don't rub, which spreads it into the seams.
- Check the splash zone. Pee travels. Look along baseboards and the edges of nearby rugs.
- Spot test. Skout's recommends testing for colorfastness on a small, hidden area first, like inside a closet.
- Apply Urine Destroyer. Spray the spot plus a 1 to 2 inch border around it.
- Wait 5 minutes. The formula needs no pretreatment and isn't affected by temperature.
- Wipe and dry. Remove the moisture with a colorfast cloth or paper towels, then dry the boards fully. Hardwood manufacturer Bruce says never to let water stand on the floor.
- Repeat if needed. Dried or stubborn spots may need a second application.

Does dog pee ruin hardwood floors?
It can, if it sits. A quick cleanup on a sealed floor with Urine Destroyer usually leaves no trace. The real damage comes from moisture soaking past the finish and from ammonia as urine sits, which can blacken wood for good.
The numbers:
- 6 to 7.5: the normal urine pH range for dogs and cats, so mildly acidic to neutral (Today's Veterinary Practice). The Merck Veterinary Manual adds that it varies with diet, medications and disease.
- Ammonia: flooring trade magazine Wood Floor Business traced large black stains in one floor to the high concentration of ammonia in urine.
- 60 to 80°F: the indoor range the National Wood Flooring Association recommends to limit moisture problems like cupping.
- 35% to 55%: the relative humidity range Mannington recommends for its hardwood.
| Sealed (finished) hardwood | Unsealed, wax-finished or worn wood | |
|---|---|---|
| What pee does | Mostly sits on top of the finish | Soaks into the wood grain |
| Typical result | Dull spot or ring if left too long | Lasting odor, dark stains, possible cupping |
| Skout's cleaners | Urine Destroyer or Stain & Odor Remover | Not recommended |
| Best move | Blot, clean, wipe dry | Blot, wipe with a barely damp cloth, dry, call a flooring pro |
How do I know if my hardwood floor is sealed?
Do a simple water drop check in a low-traffic corner. If the drops bead up, your floor is sealed and Urine Destroyer is a fit. If they soak in or darken the wood, the finish is missing or worn, so skip spray cleaners there.
Our take: the 3-check floor test. We'd run this before any cleaner touches the boards.
- Water drop: a few drops in a hidden spot. Beading means a finish is doing its job.
- Traffic paths: repeat the check in the hallway or by the back door. Finish wears thin there first, and that's often where accidents happen.
- Spot test: apply your cleaner to a hidden area, wait, wipe, and check for any color change once dry.
Not sure what finish you have? The NWFA advises using a cleaner made for the specific finish on your floor, so your installer or manufacturer is worth a quick call.
How do you get old dog urine out of hardwood?
Start by cleaning the spot again with Urine Destroyer. The product page notes dried or stubborn stains may need a second application. If the smell fades but a dark mark stays, the urine is likely in the wood itself, and that's a refinishing job, not a cleaning one.
- Smell, no stain: clean again, let it dry fully, then do a sniff check the next day.
- Gray or dull ring: often the finish, not the wood. A pro may be able to buff and recoat.
- Dark or black stain: the urine has reached the wood. Cleaning won't lift it, so a flooring pro will talk you through refinishing or replacing boards.
Finding these spots is easier at night with a cheap UV flashlight. Dogs rarely pick the middle of the room. They pick the corner behind the couch.
Does vinegar damage hardwood floors?
It can. Hardwood manufacturer Bruce lists "acidic materials such as vinegar" among things to avoid on its floors. A cleaner labeled for sealed hardwood, like Urine Destroyer, is the safer bet for your floor's finish.
| Home remedy | Why people use it | Risk on hardwood |
|---|---|---|
| Vinegar | Cheap, in every pantry | Acidic; Bruce says to avoid it on hardwood |
| Hydrogen peroxide | Popular online for lightening stains | It's a bleach and can discolor finish and wood; Family Handyman found online stain "solutions" didn't work |
| Baking soda paste | Absorbs odor | Adds wet paste that sits on the boards; manufacturers say never let moisture stand |
| Mineral spirits | Lifts sticky residue | Bruce suggests it only for stubborn spots, followed by floor cleaner; flammable, and not an odor fix |
| Ammonia cleaners | Strong and familiar | On the avoid list for Shaw, Mannington and Bruce |
| Steam mop | Feels thorough | The NWFA says steam and wet mops damage the finish and wood over time |
When do you need to sand or replace hardwood after dog pee?
Once a stain turns dark or black, cleaning won't reach it. That's when you call a flooring pro. Going forward, cleaning accidents quickly with Urine Destroyer keeps small spots from becoming board problems.
- Recoat: when the finish is dull but the wood is fine. The NWFA describes a maintenance coat as a light sanding plus a new coat of finish.
- Sand and refinish: the NWFA recommends this when the wood itself is damaged or the finish has worn to bare wood.
- Replace boards: for deep, dark urine stains, "every pro we talked to said the same thing: You have to replace the stained boards," reports Family Handyman.
Why does my dog keep peeing in the same spot on the floor?
Leftover scent. VCA Animal Hospitals notes dogs are often attracted to previously soiled spots. Clean thoroughly with Urine Destroyer, then use Stop Marking! Spray, a peppermint and lemongrass scent barrier, to discourage repeat visits.
- Spot test Stop Marking! first, and keep it off unsealed hardwood, per the product page.
- Pair it with simple cues and consistent potty breaks.
- If accidents start suddenly, VCA advises a vet visit to check for a physical cause, such as kidney disease, diabetes or bladder stones.
